This page will list out some of the keto friendly products I have found that have helped me on the journey. I will review these and look to continue to add more as I find them, I am also open to recommendations if people have ideas.
Though as previously stated this is a blog created by something that like a small child in their mind when it comes to vegetables. If I cannot see them i.e. in Soup its fine. Give me a salad and I see it was plate dressing nothing else lol.
It is worth noting that the below are substitutes for things I have been craving since my diagnosis. Substituting white rice, bread and/or pasta for brown will be a step in the direction towards managing your diabetes. As previously mentioned my weakness is portion control and so the whole “within moderation” doesn’t sit well with me. I can have a cheat day and actually not feel bad nor jeopardise my health, that is a win in my book.
I found many of these great products by attending some of the keto Festivals within London, in May 2023 I attended one such event at Woolwich Fireworks Factory. The link is here, I highly recommend you keep an eye out for local events in your area. This company hosts events in Bristol and London.
Pasta / Rice Substitutes
Edamame & Mung Bean Fettuccine
This was my initial staple replacement for pasta so that I could enjoy pasta bakes with mince and chicken. Despite my aversion to green vegetables I do like Edamame Beans when cooked with a bit of salt or even chilli salt.
To my surprise I found these made by Explore Cuisine and they taste great. Now I am not going to say they taste like pasta, that is not true but when covered in a sauce and paired with meat the texture and taste is amazing.
A box of 6 will set you back around £18.50 and can be found here. At 20g of Carbs per serving its lower than the atypical pasta which comes in at around 36g – 45g of Carbs (cooked, 75g uncooked). Doesn’t reduce carbs by a lot but I found this to be a better alternative, also this is less of a spike on blood sugar than white pasta.
NCL Kitchen – Sedani Pasta
This is my new go to for pasta dishes as its specifically made for people on a keto diet, with only 1.8g of carbs per 100g its insanely good. They come in packets 10 packets of 100g so its easy to do portion control.
I would say that the pasta doesn’t have that starchy taste as we would expect but it does taste like pasta unlike the Edamame and Mung Bean Fettuccine. I have used this in pasta bakes for months now, it cooks quickly and when covered in a sauce almost reminds me of Mac & Cheese.
This costs £17.50 for a pack of 10 at which can be bought here.
NCL Kitchen – Low Carb Orzo Rice
As with the pasta from the same company, the rice is one of the best substitutes for white rice as its only 1.8g of carbs per 100g. The portion size of the rice is great and one sachet easily provides enough for one person with an accompaniment.
When used in Thai Green Curry it is hard to tell the difference with this rice, I mean its not sticky jasmine rice as it doesn’t have the same texture but its does hold into the sauce exceptionally well. Its is the same company that makes the above pasta and a link to purchase can be found here.
Holland & Barrett – No Carb Noodles and Rice
**Updated – We made the noodles and I can confirm they did indeed smell of fish before cooking. The taste wasn’t too bad but the texture was too rubbery for my liking.**
These are both made with Konjac Flour and have less than 1 gram of carbs in both options.
At £1.49 and 3 for 2, this could be a great bargain and slightly cheaper than NCL at £1.75. This is definitely faster to cook at 1 minute for the rice however unlike the above a few reviewers have mentioned both need to be rinsed a few times and the smell of fish can be initially off putting.
The rice can be bought here and the noodles here.
Breads
This section is the hardest I find to complete as I am always on the search for good keto bread. There are a lot of variants out there but for me many feel like you’re eating air. They are missing that “stodgy” feeling of a good bread that can taste amazing and fill you up.
keto Corner
(https://www.ketocorner.co.uk/)
The good news is that the best I have found so far is keto Corner and can be found here. The challenge being a lack of delivery outside of London. London friends I highly recommend you check this one out.
Srsly Low Carb
I was introduced to srslylowcarb at the latest keto Festival in London 2024 and can confirm that their bread is also amazing.
My partner and I made burgers with both keto Corner buns and Srsly Low Carb buns and it was close. I think Srsly won in terms of tasting the closest to bread but keto Corner had a sturdier bun perfect for burgers.
At £3.89 for a pack for 4 buns it won’t break the bank and tastes amazing, they also have a whole range of products for you to try!
Savoury Snacks
Maybe it’s my northern heritage but since being diagnosed I missed having a good pie or sausage roll. The good news that there are options here as well thank god.
Ketorama Kitchen & Bakery
The option to buy pre-baked pies and other savoury snacks is too good to turn down, you can also purchase the ingredient to make a low carb flour to create your own masterpieces.
Sausage Rolls – 3 Pack
Are they as good as Greggs no… but do they fill that void that you have been missing of pork and pastry goodness… yes they do!
At 2.4g of carbs per roll its possible to enjoy more than one of these without feeling guilty.
Costs £8.25 for a pack of 3.
Sweet Tooth
Now my favourite section, I missed snacks and sweets. To be fair that is probably what had gotten me into trouble in the first instance. Too many Haribo Fangtastics!
This section I will split into companies as there are a few as covered below that make a great selection of treats.
Also without wanting to put you off your snacks, please be aware that excessive eating of said snacks will not spike blood sugar but sweeteners have laxative effects. Those taking Metformin know how dangerous this can be eek!!
Anna’a Bakery
(https://www.annasketobakery.co.uk/)
I met Anna and her husband at the keto Festival in Fireworks Factory, Woolwich. She told me her amazing story about setting up a local business focused on low carb and keto after being diagnosed with gestational diabetes after the birth of her 2nd child.
